TRIAGE

It’s finally here! The fall open house is scheduled for September 8 from 9:00 a.m. until 10:15 a.m. in the science building at Calvin College. We are looking forward to hearing about your summer and sharing with you about the fall session of TRIAGE. Parking is available in the lot across from the “fish” - where we met this summer for SRI. Make your way into the science building and we will be there to direct you to our meeting room. There will be refreshments, time to catch up with friends, information about the logistics of our Calvin College location for the fall as well as exciting plans for the fall TRIAGE experience.
Please mark the date on your calendar. We can’t wait to see you.

Hello Parents, Students, In-service Teachers, Pre-service Teachers, and School Contacts,

Coach Martin and I are making final arrangements for the fall TRIAGE experience. One of the things that we need to know is what day of the week you are planning on attending. We are going to assume that you will be coming on the same day as the spring session unless we hear from you by August 24.

We realize that this is a busy time. You are possibly starting to receive information from your schools about your fall schedule, taking time for family time together before school starts, or just enjoying the “dog days” of summer. The excitement here at TRIAGE is building and we need to hear from you about your schedule.

Dear Triage Students,

Coach Martin and I are enjoying our summer and as we talk and plan for the fall our thoughts turn to you, the Triage scientists. We hope that you are enjoying your summer as well.

After being inspired by the scientists I met during the summer SRI I have been busy observing the world around me. As I kayak on the Pigeon River, I observe butterflies enjoying the summer flowers, insects - some of whom seem to enjoy dive bombing my head, and birds whose songs fill the air. When the paddle is finished and I pull my craft onto the shore and I take a minute to kick around in the water and look for some macro invertebrates. My mind is then filled with questions. What are the names of these creatures? What do they eat? What eats them? How does their habitat help them survive? Is the habitat changing because of the increased boat traffic on the river or last night’s big storm? I am curious about the kinds of observations you are making this summer and questions that are on your minds. Please plan on sharing about your summer when we return in the fall.

Keep an eye on the web site for information about the fall schedule. Begin thinking about two things. First, we will soon be asking you to let us know what day of the week you will be attending Triage. For most of you it will be the same day as the spring, but we will check with you in case your new school year brings any changes. Second, remember to use the inspiration of time spent outside during your summer adventures to continue to formulate a research question for the fall. I am looking forward to our research that will help provide information on how to sustain the environment. We learn that every living thing is in relationship with every other living thing. I am looking forward to hearing about what you want to investigate about this amazing web of life.

We here at Triage are looking forward to seeing you again soon. We hope that the remainder of your summer is filled with observations, questions and most of all having FUN with family, friends and nature.
